Fan Writing
Like a lot of people who ended up writing Doctor Who, my earliest published work was fan fictionLearn the history of fanfic.. The first (and only) fanzine I found as a child was the Doctor Who Appreciation SocietyLearn more about the DWAS. (DWAS)'s Cosmic Masque, then edited by Jon V. Way. He published my first ever work, and from then on I inundated him with short stories, in between writing self-important articles and reviews for the various editors of the sister fanzine Celestial Toyroom.
When I eventually left DWAS, I found the joys of the internet: as I started pulling together ideas that would never be a New AdventureThe NAs were the True Who., the newsgroup alt.creative.drwho became my new fanzine and over the space of two years I uploaded my "Back from the Dead" series there.
Following that, I heard about a great idea: people had started publishing unofficial Doctor Who anthologies and donating the money made from selling them to charity. Big thick collections of Doctor Who stories by NA authors and fans alike. I submitted stories to three in one year, and was lucky enough to have them all accepted.
While I was writing those charity stories, my own Doctor Who submission was working its way through to the BBC. Once it was published, people started asking me if I would write stories for them. I've done my best to say yes at least once to everyone: some were published in fanzines, some on the internet and one was turned into a fan-filmFan film? Find out more here..
