I was born - as the joke goes - at a very early age, in Leicester to a mother who used to work the switchboard for the local hospital and a father who was a beat bobby in SystonFind out more from Wikipedia.. In the end, my father retired from the beat and was re-employed working the police switchboard: unfortunately for the sense of symmetry, my mother didn't become a policewoman but a librarian at a local school.
My older brother and me both attended the same schools: by the time we were both attending Soar Valley College, we were helping my mother out as youth leaders at the various clubs and activities she worked at. Somehow, by the time I was thirteen this had become an official engagement, I had my first job and some qualifications in youth leading and outdoor expeditions.
I applied to read English at Cambridge after I got my A-levels, and praise the SpaghedeityThis is as religious as I get. I messed up the interview so badly that I had to go to Manchester University and study drama instead. Whilst there, I met three friends who taught me to drink, sing and play the guitar. At first, I had difficulty doing all three at once, but now I've got it down to a fine art.
When university ended, it took me by surprise - rather than get a job, I stayed on instead to do a post graduate diploma in writing. When that finished, I got a job: I worked as a library assistant in John Rylands University Library ManchesterNot the one on Deansgate though. and met Cathy Howkins. I left the job after a year, but took Cathy with me: on 2nd June 2007, we got married at Stockport Registry Office, and then got drunk at The SportsmanMy favourite pub in the world. in Strines.
